Worms Eat Our Garbage

Description

They are wiggly, crawly, and slimy. They can also save homes and schools thousands of dollars a year! Learn how you can take a few worms and turn them into a money making machine! Participants will learn the life cycle of worms from cocoon through adulthood. Explore how you can create your very own worm café using simple materials. Learn the knowledge and skills needed to go back to school or your home and build a self-sustaining worm farm. Each class participant will construct and take home a working worm bin.

Objectives

During this class, students will:
  • Explain how vermicomposting creates soil from food and paper waste
  • Describe the life cycle of a red wiggler and show how the cycle is carried out in the composter
  • Identify proper materials for vermicomposting
  • Create a correct pile of waste that can be used to safely compost using worms
  • Construct a mini-compost bin using recycled/repurposed materials
