From February 1 to March 28, Michigan State University will compete in RecycleMania, an annual eight-week recycling competition between more than 400 colleges and universities across North America. The goal of the event is to increase awareness of recycling and waste management programs at participating schools by involving students, faculty and staff in a fun and friendly competition.
How it works
Schools compete in several categories to see who can collect the most recyclable materials and reduce their landfilled waste. MSU is competing in three categories this year: Gorilla Prize, E-cycleMania and Grand Champion.
The Gorilla Prize category recognizes the school that can collect the most total paper, plastic, cardboard, and household metal.
E-cycleMania is similar to Gorilla Prize, but e-waste (electronics) is tallied instead of all recyclable material, and data is only submitted for a one month window instead of all eight weeks.
Grand Champion focuses on recycling rate, which is calculated as the percentage of total waste that is recycled instead of sent to the landfill.
National recognition is provided to the winning school in each category on the RecycleMania website and in a national press release. Winning schools receive an award made out of recyclable materials, and win the right to host that category’s special traveling trophy for the coming year.
What can you do?
Get Caught Green-Handed!
Be on your greenest behavior during the eight-week recycling competition, because MSU Sustainability will be handing out prizes to students who are “caught” recycling on campus. So do your part to recycle and there might just be something in it for you!
Schedule an office clean-out
Faculty and staff can get involved by scheduling an office clean-out. The Surplus Store and Recycling Center have everything you need to host your own office clean-out and offer a variety of containers and methods to fit your needs.
