Polystyrene (Styrofoam)

Polystyrene is a  synthetic plastic polymer that can come in either rigid or foam forms. One commonly recognized use for polystyrene is in packaging materials such as Styrofoam, packaging peanuts, and the like.

Reuse Options

MSU Departments can send surplus and/or reusable polystyrene items that are in good physical condition through campus mail to the Surplus Store. If you have more items than would fit in a paper box, please submit a Pick Up Request Form (PURF). Students, faculty, staff and the general public can drop items off at the Surplus Store during regular business hours.

Where to Recycle Polystyrene

Currently, polystyrene recycling is only available to MSU Departments. MSU Departments located in buildings without routed Styrofoam/Polystyrene pick-up should bag all materials and submit a recycling service request. Those Departments located in buildings with routed Styrofoam/Polystyrene pick-up should bag all materials and leave them in the designated storage area until pick-up. For questions regarding scheduled Styrofoam/Polystyrene pick-ups, please contact MSU Recycling at recycle@msu.edu or by calling (517)355-1723.

Where Does It Go?

Polystyrene collected for reuse is sent to the MSU Surplus and either reused for shipping packaging materials or redistributed through the Surplus Store. Items that are recycled are collected and sent to Dart Container Corporation.
